Makkah Masjid is one of the oldest and largest mosques in India, was built in Hyderabad during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah, the 6th Qutub Shahi Sultan of Hyderabad.
The fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty commissioned bricks to be made from the soil brought from Mecca, the holiest site of Islam and inducted them into the construction of the central arch of the mosque, thus rendering the mosque its name.


On 18 May 2007, a bomb exploded inside the peaceful Makkah Masjid at the time of Friday prayers.
